Using the Art of Movie Watching to End the Boredom of Long Travel

Taking extended trips can be quite boring if one gets on a plane and accepts the entertainment (if any) that is provided. Certainly there are those that like to chat with their neighbor but listening to other people talk can be tiring in and of itself. Trains can be quite boring because the options are either very limited or non-existent. What if you are not interested in the movie offered on the plane or, even worse, what if the video player is broken?

I have found that the best way to ensure that a long trip is seldom boring is to bring a good quality portable DVD player and several movies and possibly some educational programs with me to play on this unit. How does one go about finding the most cost-effective DVD player? What is truly the best value for the money. Your ability to assess your own needs as well as determine which players have these features for the best price will determine how effective you are at this task.

A few important things to think about are the quality of the image you desire, the screen size, the media you will be playing, and the battery life you will need. The image quality can range from good to excellent as you consider an inexpensive generic DVD player or one of the new portable Blu-ray DVD players. It is given that you will definitely pay a large premium if you purchase a Blu-ray and you will also pay more for every movie you buy. That’s the price you pay for being on the cutting edge of technology.

A larger screen will make everything easier to see. This is the reason why “armchair quarterbacks” purchase 60″ plasma screens as a status symbol among their peers. Bigger is better, but bigger is also pricier. This is a point that should be remembered if you par planning to get a screen that is larger than the 7 to 8 inch variety that is common among portable DVD players. Formatting of the media is important if you are planning to use a variety of media such as WAV, mp4, mpeg, as well as the standard format DVD. Thus compatibility is an important consideration when selecting your new unit. Finally, battery life is a critical factor if you intend to use you unit for the duration of the trip. In addition to this consideration, it might be important to determine how long it takes the unit to recharge on house current.

Now that we have considered the type of portable DVD unit, what can be more important than the content you are viewing? Of course, movies are the natural first choice. Like all of us, I tend to have my personal favorites such as Shawshank Redemption, and The Graduate that I bring these with me on every trip. It is important to note here that there are so many other options to the feature length movie. If you have children, you will naturally be bringing episodes of Barney or Little Einstein, but what about your learning?

Our kids get a head-start in life watching Sesami Street so why should learning stop at the age of six? The answer, of course, is that is shouldn’t and doesn’t. The DVD offers and almost limitless opportunity to learn about everything from the National Parks, to the History of Baseball, to martial arts techniques. If your spouse is joining you on a trip, why not learn about cooking together? Many of these programs consist of several disks so the consideration of battery life can be central to your enjoyment of these programs on your journey.

You don’t always have to purchase these DVDs either. Many shops, such as InMotion, are based in the airports and permit you to rent a DVD at one airport, view it, and drop it off when you reach your destination airport. What could be more convenient than that? Of course, you pay a premium for the convenience of this service as well.

In summary, the DVD provides the traveler with a way to be entertained and educated at the same time. The smart consumer will consider the features that are needed versus those that are nice to have as they decide which is the most cost-effective unit to purchase. Once purchased, what you play is an important and personal choice that depends on the individual taste of user. The number and variety of programs available are increasing by leaps and bounds, and cater to every taste whether you are a movie buff that likes to watch As Good As It Gets, to someone interested in learning effective Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques, to someone just interested in being entertained by old Three Stooges movies.
